He bravely served as a Radio Repairman and Expert Rifleman in the 566th Signal Corps/66th Infantry Black Panthers Division. He survived the Leopoldville Ship Disaster on Dec. 24, 1944, which was on its way to replace the weary Battle of the Bulge soldiers when the converted cruise ship was hit with a torpedo from a German U-Boat. It was Christmas Eve and their SOS went unheard for hours...as many of his fellow soldiers lost their lives. The survivors always carried the weight of the memory of their Comrades-in-Arms taken from them in such a tragic manner.
