He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard in 1937, prior to World War II. He served as a Machinist Mate 2nd Class on the USCGC Daphne in the San Francisco Bay. In 1943, he was commissioned as an officer and served on a WAGL. After the war, he served in Alaska and retired from the Coast Guard. He served in Korea during the Korean War and during the Vietnam War Era. He retired as a Commander in 1964, but was recalled to active duty from 1966 to 1968.
