He trained in the United States Army before going overseas to Sydney, Australia. Once there, he traveled up the northeastern coast to Brisbane and Townsville, Australia. Then he landed in Samarai, New Guinea, on to Aitape, New Guinea where he was wounded on August 23, 1944. He returned to a United States hospital in California on December 24, 1944, and then was then honorably discharged from service on November 4, 1945. During his service, he was recognized with 3 Overseas Service Bars, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze Star, 1 Victory Ribbon, 1 Service Stripe, the "Purple Heart" for Military Merit, and the "Efficiency, Honor, Fidelity" medal for Good Conduct.
