He was a Merchant Marine and served as an Oiler on the SS Azalea City, a 5,000-ton American merchant freighter, owned by Mobile's Waterman Steamship Corporation. He was killed when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat on February 21, 1942, off the Maryland coast.
