He served in the United States Army as a Private First Class in Company L, 318th Infantry Regiment. He entered active service on July 3, 1943, in Columbus, Ohio. His military occupational specialty was Heavy Machine Gunner (605). He served in the European Theater of Operations and participated in the Northern France campaign. He departed for overseas service in August 1944 and served in England and France. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, Purple Heart, Combat Infantry Badge, Good Conduct Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and World War II Victory Medal. He was wounded in action in France on September 23, 1944.
