Activity During WWII

He was stationed on the LST-51 which was initially assigned to the European Theater and participated in the Normandy Invasion on June 6, 1944, the Invasion of Southern France in August -September1944. He received minor wounds during the invasion of Southern France on Aug. 17,1944. He notified his family that he had recovered and was back in service. His ship was transferred to the Pacific Theater in February of 1945 and supported the invasion of Okinawa in May-June 1945. On the November 1, 1945 Muster Roll it is noted that Coxswain Battavio died due to a cerebral concussion. No other record as to how he received the injury was available. He was buried in the American Cemetery in Santa Barbara, Philippine Islands. His remains were returned to the US in 1948 and he was reinterred in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Lansdale, PA along side his parents.
