Served from June 1, 1942 to February 1946. While stationed at Kaneohe Bay Naval Air Station, Oahu, Hawaii, his plane went down when the engine caught fire. They were rescued after 2 days in a life raft and continued flying out of Tinian Island to the Mariana Islands. Then to Iwo Jima and finally to the Philippines.
