Owned and operated a corner grocery/confectionery store. Was a respected informal community leader. His store served as a gathering point for the neighborhood. People from all over Erie would come to his store, Miller's Ice Cream Bar, for rationed cigarettes. He was one of the few store owners who would dole them out equitably to all, rather than horde or only sell them to friends or good customers.
