Awarded the Navy Cross, Air Medal, Congressional Medal of Honor. 25 enemy planes shot down, including 20 in a 17-day period. On February 3, 1944, he left his formation to strafe an enemy anti-aircraft tower. Was hit by flak and died in the ensuing crash, one day before his 24th birthday. He was the third, last and youngest Marine Corsair pilot to receive the Medal of Honor.
