Activity During WWII

On Christmas Eve 1944, while leading more than 2000 B-17's on a raid over Germany, lost an engine and was forced to drop out of the formation. Aircraft was attacked by enemy fighters. It was severely damaged and set on fire. Remained at the controls to keep the aircraft stable while his crew bailed out and then went down with the plane.
