Reported for duty at Chanute Field, Rantoul, Illinois. Sent to England and B-17 pilot. On the raid to bombard the ball bearing factory in Schweinfurt, Germany, he was shot down. Taken prisoner and was a POW for 1 1/2 years at Stalag Luft III. When Russia was getting close, the prisoners were moved at midnight with cold temperatures, on foot. Later put in box cars that were filthy and overcrowded. They were taken to Mooseburg, Germany where conditions were horrible.
