Volunteered to patrol Long Island Sound aboard a reserve coast guard cutter (a requisitioned and re-filled civilian motor boat) two days a week. This was mostly picket-duty searching for u-boats. Once they escorted a crippled American carrier to Brooklyn Navy Yard.
