Activity During WWII

Served in submarines in the Pacific fleet. Began his service as executive officer on the USS O-3 after attending the submarine school in New London, Connecticut. Made 5 war patrols aboard the USS Apogon SS-308, the last of which was most notable for surviving a ram made by a Japanese freighter. Given command of the USS Chivo SS-341 in 1944. Awarded the Silver Star Medal and 3 Letters of Commendation for his WWII service.
