He and his wife owned Charlestown Welding Company in Massachusetts which provided fabricated parts and repair services for the Navy shipyards in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Delaware. They supported the war effort by participating in war drives to collect rags for blankets and bandages, metal and paper. They also planted a Victory Garden during food rationing.
