Engineering Officer on the USS Hughes DD-410, participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf, October 23-26 and in the December 7th landings in Ormoc Bay. December 10, 1944, while on picket duty in the Surigao Straits in the Philippines, the ship was hit by a Kamikaze Japanese plane with a 500 pound bomb. Of the 18 personnel many were in the boiler fire room. The ship limped back to Hunters Point San Francisco, California on 1 engine and 1 boiler. Repaired and finished the war from Alaska to the Kurile Islands of Japan.
