On December 7, 1941, he completed the U.S. Marine Corps Boot Camp and was stationed at North Island in San Diego, California. He was sent to clerical school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and returned to North Island in the fall of 1942. From there he was sent to the South Pacific, Malaysia and Espiritu Santo in the New Hebrides, where he performed clerical work. In June of 1944, he returned to El Centro, California for 7 months and then went back to the South Pacific until the war ended.
