Activity During WWII

He was on the USS Thornton AVD-11. It was an old 4-stack destroyer converted to carry fuel for PBY aircraft to be able to refuel at sea. He was at Pearl Harbor at the time of the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941. He had medals for the 5 battles he was in: Pearl Harbor, Wake Island, Midway Island, Guam and the Aleutian Islands. They kept trying to make him a chief petty officer but he would not take it because he would have to wear a tie.
