Shot Down six times in B-17 and B-24 bombers over Europe. On one occasion the pilot brought the plane down in Italy. They exchanged half a wing from another downed plane for their shorn wing even though it was six feet short, the pilot flew it back to their field in Africa. Mother notified he was killed in action; two weeks later he walked in on her.
