B-24 bombardier. Hit by flak and shot down on his 43rd mission while bombing the Romanian oil fields of Ploesti. He jumped out of the nose wheel surrounded by a ball of flame with his chute smoldering and parachuted down into the cornfields of Romania. He was taken prisoner, escaped and wandered the countryside for six weeks, eventually hooking up with the advancing Russians. Finally wandering into a hotel in Bucharest, the first person he ran into was his old economics professor from college.
