Entered Army Air Force in 1940. Served in South Pacific for three years during the war. Member of the 80th Fighter Squadron, 5th Air Force, known as the 'Headhunter Squadron'. Served in the Battles of the East Indies, Papua and New Guinea as a communications technician and cryptographer. He earned the following decorations: Distinguished Unit Citation Badge with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, American Defense Medal and five overseas bars. Received honorable discharge in September 1945.
