Activity During WWII

Entered service January 21, 1943. Entered into active duty on January 28, 1943 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois. Sent to Coast Guard school where he learned seamanship and navigational work. Also trained in driving and landing of crafts and tug boats. He was Ship's Master of the 337th Harbor Craft Company and assigned to a rescue boat for rescue of downed pilots in the Gulf of Mexico. Stationed in Martha's Vineyard, then moved to England and saw the buzz bombs. Took part in D-Day landing at Normandy June 8, 1944. After D-Day was assigned duty in the English channel to tow in barges to be unloaded, after Battle of the Bulge was flown into Austria where he traveled on a gun boat up and down the Danube River. During this time, his unit liberated a lot of Displaced Persons Camps. He was also involved in the Nuremberg Trials.
