Was a member of the huge crew of the USS Southerland DD-743 since it was commissioned in December 1944. The USS Southerland DD-743 led the parade of Allied ships into Tokyo Bay. In December 1944 he watched from his gunnery position aboard the USS Southerland DD-743 as his ship led the Task Group into the Channel.
