Earned a Masters Mechanic degree from Pittsburgh Institute of Aeronautics. He went to Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio. After he was asked to be Chief Master Mechanic at Baer field, Fort Wayne, Indiana, an APO for war planes flying overseas. He grounded many planes until they were mechanically fit. Afterward, enlisted in Army Air Corps.
