Called to active duty with the 248th Coast Artillery, Washington National Guard on September 16, 1940 to Fort Warden, Washington. Officer Candidate School (OCS) at Fort Monroe, Virginia in June 1942. Graduated as 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to the 41st Coast Artillery, 8th Artillery Battalion, Hawaii.
