Joined the British American Ambulance Corps in 1941. Was a survivor of the Zamzam and was held prisoner by the Germans in Biarritz and Lure, France. After release, served four years in the U.S. Army Intelligence. Stationed in Ireland, England and France, where he attended Officer School in Fontainebleau and was commissioned as a Lieutenant.
