Activity During WWII

Served as an operations officer for Fleet Air Wing 17, operating in the New Guinea area of the Southwest Pacific, September 11, 1942 to May 7, 1944. He demonstrated keen initiative and sound planning in the operation of PBY-5 patrol planes in strikes against the Japanese. As a result of the offensive action of the aircraft under his command, an estimated 128,750 tons of Japanese shipping was destroyed. Awarded the Legion of Merit Medal on July 17, 1944.
