Served aboard the USS Abner Read in the Aleutian Islands until one third of ship was blown off by a mine. Then went to the South Pacific where the ship was sunk in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. He was severely injured, spent 2 years in Navy and Veterans Hospital. Received the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
