Activity During WWII

In Battle of Atlantic 1941-1942. Was in planning logistic section, Commander U.S. Navy Forces, Europe, London, England 1943-1944 for Normandy Invasion June 6,1944. Commanded U.S. Navy Reconnaissance Unit attached to 7th Corps, June 9, 1944 Utah Beach to Cherbourg, June 26. In Cherbourg captured Fort DuHomet and released 52 U.S. paratrooper prisoners, captured German minefield in harbor and advised our mine sweeper outside port. Established U.S. Navy Headquarters in Cherbourg. Was senior U.S. Navy Officer in Cherbourg, June 26 to June 29; Assistant Port Director, Cherbourg July 15 to August 2. Carried out reconnaissance of Brittany, attached 8th Corps, General Patton's 3rd Army, August 6 to September 8, 1944, then carried our reconnaissance of Le Havre. Original task force unit suffered 25% casualties. Was awarded Navy Cross.
