Infantry; entered military service in September 1940. Stationed at Fort Hancock, New Jersey until he went to Officer Candidate School (OCS) in 1943. Became an officer in July 1943; went overseas to the European Theater and fought there. He was captured during the Battle of the Bulge in December 1944 and served as a prisoner of war until May of 1945. He also received many medals and was wounded 3 times.
