Activity During WWII

Received boot training at Naval Training Base, Sampson, New York; then sent to Camp Bradford, Norfolk, Virginia; then Gunfire Support Craft Amphibious Training Base, Fort Pierce, Florida;, then to Receiving Station, Boston, Massachusetts to join the LCT(R) group. On the Queen Elizabeth to England to pick up English ship the LCT(R) 450. There was a crew of 20 men and 1,080 rockets on the English ship. Involved in the Normandy invasion, then went to Southern France invasion. After V-E Day was shipped back to the U.S. Another ship was being built, so went to Receiving Station Charleston, South Carolina to commission rocket ship the USS LSM(R) 405. From there, was on way to Pacific, but before arrival, had signs of meningitis and was taken off the ship at Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone. Remainder of service at Receiving Station, Coco Solo, Panama Canal Zone until sent to U.S. Navy Personnel Service Center, Lido Beach, New York for honorable discharge on November 25, 1945. Received the Certificate of Merit on April 5, 1945 for outstanding qualities and performance of duty in deck division, crew 7491, unit 125, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 2 Bronze stars, Normandy invasion and Southern France invasion, Victory Medal and the American Campaign Medal.
