Activity During WWII

First station of duty was at Camp Croft in Spartanburg, South Carolina, an Infantry Replacement Center. After about 8 months sent to Fort Jackson in Columbia, South Carolina to cadre for 77th Infantry Division. Trained as Platoon Leader of heavy machine gun platoon, platoon leader of 81 mm mortar platoon. Communication Officer in Battalion Headquarters Company and Commander of Heavy Weapons Company. In March 1944 transferred to units in Italy which were scheduled for immediate combat duty. Assistant Battalion Communications Officer, 1st Battalion, 337th Infantry Regiment, 85th Infantry Division, 5th Army in Italy. Was wounded and sent to 23rd General Hospital in Naples. September 24, 1944 was captured by a German patrol behind the lines, taken to Stalag VII-A, near Munich, Germany. Was then taken to another camp in Poland. Camp was then vacated and was forced to move to another camp near Luckenwalde. After about 3 months the Russian Army entered the camp and we were transferred to U.S. Army control, and then back home.
