Joined National Guard in Atlantic, Iowa, February 10, 1941. Was a member of anti-tank company at Clarinda, Iowa; then 34th Division, 168th Infantry, Camp Claiborne, Louisiana. Later trained in Belfast, Ireland, then Glasgow, Scotland. Sent to Algiers, Africa for combat duty and was captured at Faid Pass, February 1943. Prisoner of war in Germany from February 17, 1943 to May 4, 1945. When prisoners of war were liberated by the Russians, returned to U.S. military forces. Discharged September 16, 1945.
