Entered air force in 1942. Was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant after pilot training. Went to Bombardier school and was assigned to B-17 wing. Sent to Foggia, Italy in 1944 and was shot down on his first mission. All survived after the Russians found them behind enemy lines in Romania, and returned to Italy. Flying twenty-four more missions and being shot down on his 24th, ended his tour duty in Europe. Returned to the U.S. and remained in air force for over twenty-one years, flying in B-29, B-50, and B-47's.
