Enlisted and served from 1940 to 1946. Served 54 months on the destroyer minesweeper the USS Southard. at his station Gun number 1, during 7 major battles in the Solomon islands, Guadalcanal, Okinawa, Admiralties, Guam and the Philippines. The Southard was credited, too, for blasting shore batteries, assisting in the downing of kamikaze planes, bombing a submarine, and rescuing marine pilots whose planes were hit.
