On D-Day, as a sergeant in the 4th Infantry Division, landed on Utah Beach; assigned to accompany his unit commanding officer. After two days of battle, with heavy casualties to forward observers, was reassigned to that duty. Was wounded five days later and evacuated to England, but soon returned to action, taking part in the Battle of St. Lo, the liberation of Paris, and the ongoing campaigns until the German surrender. Then returned to the U.S. to train for the planned invasion of Japan; was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant. Following the Japanese surrender he was discharged. Was awarded the Purple Heart, the invasion arrowhead, and five campaign stars.
