Activity During WWII

General Deck Officer on the USS President Jackson APA-18; the first ship to land combat troops in the Pacific Theater. While aboard, he saw extensive combat in the Battles of Guadalcanal, Rendova and Bougainville. The ship suffered major damage from a Japanese dive bomber attack. He served as Top Watch Landing Boat Officer, Gunnery Officer and Damage Control Officer. From aerial photographs he prepared special maps of approaches to beach landing sites. He was returned to the U.S. due to serious illness resulting from his South Pacific duty. He served the remainder of the war as Ship's Service Officer at Port Hueneme, California.
