He served from February 14, 1941 to November 16, 1943, in the South Pacific; the Philippine Islands, Guadalcanal, Sidney and Melbourne, Australia. He was the first as a crew member of the B-17 Flying Fortress, then with the 59th Coast Artillery. He was awarded many honors including the Purple Heart.
