Activity During WWII

Baker 1st class. Joined U.S. Navy October 8, 1942 at start of WWII. He was initially assigned to the HMS Pybus D-98, which he rode through the Panama Canal to the Brooklyn Navy Yard where it was turned over to the British Navy. He was then sent back to the West Coast and picked up the USS Wake Island CVE-65. This ship went through Panama Canal delivering U.S. Army soldiers into various parts of Indian Ocean before returning back to the Cape of Good Hope and into the North Atlantic. Also saw action in South Pacific and was transferred off the Wake Island three days before it was hit by two Kamikazes that took the bow off the ship. He was taken by a hospital ship back to San Diego and sent to the USS Henderson DD-785. When war ended, he was sent home October 25, 1945.
