Activity During WWII

He was a Civilian Merchant Seaman. Brought into the conflict when Great Britain stood alone. The national Maritime Union and its sailors were pressed into convoy service in the attempt of supplying Britain and its allies with crucial war materials and at the same time, staying out of the ever escalating war in Europe. In 1941 he was aboard a gasoline tanker that was torpedoed by a German U-boat and sunk off the coast of New Jersey. He was severely wounded in the attack and thrown into the water from a large explosion below deck and was one of only three survivors.
