March 8, 1945, was a member of the 75th Division, which was first infantry to cross the Remagen (Ludendorff) Bridge while being bombed and strafed by German planes. It was the last bridge standing that connected the east and west banks of the Rhine River. That night entering the town of Unkel, platoon was ambushed and he was wounded. Awarded the Purple Heart.
