Was drafted into the Army Infantry in June 1941. Left San Francisco on a troop ship two days before the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Shortly after arriving at Pearl Harbor, left for the South Pacific Theatre and participated in the Battle of Guadalcanal. Served in numerous battles in the South Pacific Theatre until 1944. Returned to the U.S. and was stationed in Fort Riley, Kansas until discharge in November 1944 as a Technical Sergeant.
