He enlisted in the U.S. Army, 1 April 1943 in Los Angeles, California at the age of 19 and was stationed for a time at Camp Roberts, California in 1943. He volunteered to become a U.S. Army Ranger. His training took him to Tennessee, Florida, New Jersey, Scotland and England. He was assigned to the 5th Rangers, Company C, and that unit landed at Omaha Beach, France. On 9 July 1944 his platoon sergeant sent him and group of soldiers behind enemy lines to look for land mines. He found one and stepped on it, causing him to lose the lower portion of his right leg. He was shipped back to England and then to Brigham City, Utah and he was fitted with a prosthetic leg. He was discharged from there on 13 September 1945. He was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Good Conduct medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater ribbon, WWII Victory Medal, Overseas service bar, and the French Croix de Guerre medal.
