Army Infantry, ROTC for 3 years, 1940-1943 at the University of Kentucky. 17 weeks of basic training at Camp Wolters, Texas in 1943. Infantry Officer Candidate School (OCS), Fort Benning 1944. Rifle Platoon leader, Company B, 261st Infantry, 65th Infantry Division. He was severely wounded on April 26, 1945 on Danube Crossing in Germany. He was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross and Purple Heart with Cluster.
