Activity During WWII

Enlisted in Navy after high school at the age of 18. He was sent to the Great Lakes for training and then to the USS Arizona BB-39. He was killed in action in WWII on December 7, 1941, when a bomb hit his ship. We were notified two weeks later. A Legion Post was built in Harwood and named the Richard Nelson Post. He was the first casualty in the area.
