Was a member of the U.S. Navy Seabees 13th Naval Construction Battalion from 1943 to 1945. The 13th built airfields on Tinian, then moved to Okinawa to build the airfield and hospital. When the 13th was decommissioned, he completed his service on the YMS-106, sweeping mines in the San Francisco Bay area.
