Participated in Campaigns in North Africa facing General Erwin Rommel and his Afrika Korps. Earned the Bronze Star and a battlefield commission after artillery unit was overrun by the enemy. Assumed command of unit when all the commissioned officers were killed and regrouped the unit. He and his brother Billy both participated in the Invasion of Anzio Beach and were part of the occupation forces in Europe after the war.
