He served as an officer in the U.S. Army during the war. After completing basic training and officer candidate school he served as an officer in an engineer company in the China-Burma-India Theater from January 1943 to June 1945. He was then assigned to Camp Gruber in Oklahoma before accepting a commission in the army reserve.
