One of the first 1,000 Houston volunteers to join the U.S. Navy to replace the crew of the USS Houston cruiser that had been lost during the Battle of the Sea of Java in 1942. He had his basic training in San Diego, California, then went on to war. Stationed in Japan, Alaska, San Francisco, California and Seattle, Washington.
