My grandfather was drafted after graduating from Holmes High School in 1943. He completed boot camp at Great Lakes, Illinois with Company 924. He served in the Navy from July 1, 1943 to August 1945. He sailed on the Grant Wood and also guarded German prisoners of war. After the Germans surrendered, he signed up to serve on a destroyer in the Pacific. When I asked him why he would volunteer to go back into a war zone he said, "I thought I'd never get to see that part of the world."
