Upon graduating from St. Lawrence University in 1942, he enlisted in the Navy Air Corps and was subsequently sent to Officer Candidate School. He flew a PBM (Martin Mariner) with a crew of twelve. He was based at Okinawa and Tokyo Bay. Following the Japanese surrender, he flew the Atomic Bomb Survey Groups over Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
